How Individual Donations Work
Gardnerville Elementary School (GES) is a part of the Douglas County School District, government entity, not a private nonprofit. That means your gift is still tax-deductible under IRS Code §170(c)(1), which covers donations made “to a federal, state, or local government, if the contribution is for a public purpose.” That public purpose is to benefit the growth and development of education at that given place. We at GES ensure to utilize the funds in such a way that keeps your donation accurate and commendable according to Publication 526.
How Donating Benefits You
Giving to GES doesn’t just help the school—it can also help you at tax time.
When you make a charitable contribution to a qualified government entity:
You may reduce your taxable income.
The amount you donate can lower the income the IRS taxes you on.
You can claim the deduction on your federal tax return.
If you itemize your deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040, you can include your donation to GES.
You may owe less in federal income tax.
By lowering taxable income, you may ultimately reduce your total tax bill.
For Example: If you donate $200 and you’re in the 22% tax bracket, you could save about $44 on your taxes.
If you donate via mail with Cash/Check, and need a Donation Letter Receipt for your records, please email Shannon Lamaestra.
